The main flow works without any setup. Only these extra search sources need your own key:

Tutorial search works without an API key.
YouTube search (videos, music, podcasts) needs your personal YouTube Data API key.
Provider and expert search needs a Serper.dev API key.
API keys are stored locally in your browser only.
Signing in with Google and external API keys are independent of each other.
Invited members and viewers of public collections do not need any API keys to browse and use collections created by others.

What do I need?

Search tutorials: Ready immediately – no API key required
Search YouTube videos, music and podcasts: YouTube Data API key
Search providers and experts: Serper.dev API key
Save finds: Google sign-in
Create collections and collaborate: Google sign-in

(Optional) If you don't have one yet, create a Google account. Google-Konto erstellen
Open the Google Cloud Console and select or create a project. Google Cloud Console
Enable the YouTube Data API v3 for that project. YouTube Data API v3
Create an API key under Credentials.
Restrict the key to the YouTube Data API v3.
Paste the key into Fundstoff under Settings.

Setting this up is free: the Google Cloud project and the YouTube Data API key cost nothing, and searches use your personal free quota of 10,000 units per day (about 100 searches per day). Playback through the embedded player does not consume that search quota.

Note: creating the API key requires a Google account, because it is generated in the Google Cloud Console. The key itself then works for anyone using Fundstoff, even without a Google login.

When is this key needed? Only for your own YouTube searches (videos, music, podcasts). You do not need it to watch videos already saved in a collection, to browse public collections, or to view collections you were invited to.

Set up YouTube key

Open serper.dev. serper.dev
Create an account.
Copy your key from the dashboard.
Save the key in Fundstoff under Settings.
The key is used for provider and expert searches.

Creating the account and the key is free. Serper includes 2,500 free searches on signup; beyond that, usage may incur costs according to their current terms.

When is this key needed? Only for your own provider and expert searches. You do not need it to browse public collections or to view collections you were invited to.

Google sign-in is needed for:

your finds
saved finds
synced custom filters
your own collections
comments, votes and ratings

It is not needed to browse the landing page or to view public collections.

Google sign-in is not the same as a YouTube API key: the sign-in identifies you in Fundstoff, the API key gives your browser access to YouTube search.

Every result has a save action. Finds go into your personal finds and can be added to a collection later — including afterwards from the finds.

Collections are shared collections. You can use collections privately, invite-only or publicly. Invited people must sign in with their Google account and accept the invitation. Only then can they add finds, comment, rate, tag and vote. The invitation link alone grants no access rights. Public collections can be read without signing in; any active participation requires signing in and membership.

Collections

Your YouTube and Serper keys are stored in your browser's local storage.
They are not synced with your Fundstoff account.
You need to enter them again in another browser or on another device.
They are lost when you clear your browser data.
Fundstoff never stores your keys in its backend.
Search requests go directly from your browser to YouTube or Serper.

My YouTube search returns an error.: Check that the key is valid, that YouTube Data API v3 is enabled and that the key restriction allows that API.
My search suddenly stops working.: The daily quota of your Google Cloud project may be used up. It resets each day.
No providers or experts are shown.: That search needs a Serper.dev key. Add it in Settings and set a country or location.
My key is gone.: Keys live only in the current browser. After clearing browser data or switching device, enter it again.
Can I use Fundstoff without any key?: Yes — tutorial search works without a key. Sign in with Google to save what you find.
